WHY SHOULD I SUPPORT Rainbow PUSH?
We have been in this fight for over 40 years and on the front lines of every significant civil rights issue. Rev. Jackson’s two presidential runs added over three million new registered African American voters who helped to change the color of city, state and local governments all over this country. We continue to register voters and protect voter rights.
We change the way America does business by challenging corporations to end the one-way trade deficit of targeting minority consumers but refusing to do business with minority entrepreneurs. The bar for the use of minority financial firms has been raised since we started the Wall Street Project. Our economic projects across the country have increased minority access to corporate decision makers, employment and contracting opportunities.
For over 40 years, our PUSH Excel program has encouraged parents and students to pledge to take more personal responsibility for learning. We sponsor bus tours to historically Black colleges. In the past 10 years, we have given over $4.8 million dollars in college scholarships. We put a spotlight on student loan debt and high quality public education.
We have saved hundreds of homes from foreclosure, and fight daily to protect voting rights, end gun violence and stop mass incarceration.
The Rainbow PUSH Coalition (RPC) works every day to protect, defend and gain civil rights by leveling economic and educational playing fields and promoting peace and justice around the world. Though officially launched in 1996, our story began in 1966, when Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. appointed Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr. the first director of Operation Breadbasket in Chicago. In 1971, Rev. Jackson founded Operation PUSH to improve economic conditions for black communities all over America. After his first presidential run in 1984, Rev. Jackson started the National Rainbow Coalition to fight for voter rights and affirmative action. The Rainbow PUSH Coalition is the merger of those two organizations.
We have just completed six months of challenges to every basic right we fought for more than 50 years ago. We need your support now to continue the fight:
• to protect the voting rights of every American in light of the recent decision by the US Supreme Court striking down elements of Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965;
• to end the growing violence in urban America that has resulted in thousands of shootings and senseless deaths in cities across the country;
• for reinvestment by banks in low income communities in Chicago, Philadelphia, New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles and Detroit where many African Americans face double digit unemployment that has resulted in thousands of home foreclosures;
• for a moratorium on student loan debt that now exceeds credit card debt.
Our team of dedicated staff work from international headquarters in Chicago and regional offices in Washington DC, New York, Detroit, Atlanta, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Under the tireless leadership of Rev. Jackson, we research issues, facilitate discussions, negotiate and mediate, and organize demonstrations, and boycotts. We spotlight what is good and shine light on what is not. Our work takes us from Main Street to Wall Street…from Chicago’s South Side to South Africa’s Soweto. We are dedicated and we work every day to make a difference.
