Holocaust Denier has GOP on Edge of Disgrace

A statement by Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr.

Not long ago, I toured the Auschwitz death camp in Poland, my mood alternating between anguished anger and soul piercing sorrow.

More than one million men, women and children – the vast majority of them Jewish – were marched into the camp gas chambers and murdered. Afterwards, their bodies were fed on conveyor belts into ovens, leaving behind not much more than ash - and ghosts.

About one out of six of the six million Jews slaughtered during the Holocaust perished in Auschwitz.

Our tears will never stop flowing. No sane person would ever try to deny this horrific history. Yet that is exactly what Arthur Jones, a candidate running for Congress in Illinois as a Republican, has been doing for years.

Jones is a notorious neo-Nazi, white supremacist and Holocaust denier, who is running unopposed in the GOP primary in the Third Congressional District. If nothing changes, he will be the Republican nominee after the March 20, 2018 balloting.

This is a disgrace and embarrassment that the Republican Party will not be able to hide behind even the tallest wall.

The GOP must deny this denier – by any (legal) means necessary – and find a way to dump him from the ballot and end the toxic politics of division and hate spreading like a plague across the country in the era of Trump.

Jones is a father figure and role model for the kind of lost young men who paraded through the streets of Charlottesville last summer, carrying torches and chanting, “Jews will not replace us.”

That is the sort of rhetoric that built the ovens of Auschwitz and fueled the lynch mobs of America.

From the White House on down, Republicans must condemn the Jones’ candidacy. In this case, silence is truly treasonous.
