Holiday Tradition: Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. to Visit Cook County Jail Christmas Morning

CHICAGO – The vast majority of the nearly 6,000 men and women locked up in Cook County Jail are pretrial detainees and therefore still eligible to register and to vote.

On Christmas DayRev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr. will register as many of them as he can when he spends the holy morning doing what he has for decades on Christmas: visiting, worshiping – and maybe even dancing – with the inmates and staff of one of the largest jails in the country

Monday, December 25, 2017

10 A.M. – 11:30 A.M.

Cook County Jail

2700 South California Avenue

Chicago, IL.

“As they affirm their citizenship by registering to vote they are empowered in a legitimate way,” says Rev. Jackson, founder and president of the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. “There is nothing about being incarcerated that should deprive one of the rights of citizenship. We are trying to convince youth who are in this situation to think and work their way out and to never return. We intend to register them on site as a way of bringing them into the center of society.”

Joining Rev. Jackson at the jail will be the Rainbow PUSH band and the Gideon 300 Men’s Choir of Salem Baptist Church of Chicago, senior pastor Rev. James Meeks.

During the visit, Rainbow PUSH will also offer free testing for HIV.

Rev. Jackson has been visiting Cook County Jail for decades on Christmas morning. Operation PUSH (now the Rainbow PUSH Coalition) was founded on December 25, 1971.

“We have always reached out to the dispossessed, the imprisoned, the voiceless,” Rev. Jackson says. “Whether it is going to the jail to uplift spirits or going to the street corner to feed the hungry, that is how we celebrate Christmas.”
